Process
Each piece made by Melissa New York is unique and one of a kind which involves multiple steps to deliver an exceptional experience to the customer.
Below, we show an example of a process from the moment we receive a consultation.
The entire process takes about one to two months, depending on the difficulty of sourcing the stones as well as the complexity of the design.
1. Client Consultation
In conjunction with the client, a preliminary sketch is drawn for approval.
Sketch produced together with the client
2. Sourcing Materials
A rough stone is cut to bring out the beauty of the natural color and radiance within the stone.
Metals and stones which involves sourcing a particular stone for the client. Our stones are all ethically sourced worldwide and we work with cutters in Belgium and Germany.
3. 3D Wax Design
3D wax design ready for client approval.
Melissa then works on creating a 3D wax design by hand to show to the client.
4. Casting
Completion of wax design - ready for casting.
Once the wax design is finalized, it is cast into the metal of choice (18K gold or platinum). This process takes about two weeks.
5. Polishing
The metal is worked on with sandpaper and various tools to smooth and shine the surfaces.
Once the casting is complete, Melissa meticulously applies her finishing touches, which includes polishing and unseen textures according to the theme of the piece.
6. Setting
Channel setting is chosen for this design so that extra metal is not covering any part of these exceptionally cut stones.
The stone is often set without use of conventional prongs. Channel, burnish, and pavé settings are often chosen to keep the lines clean and enhance the unobstructed beauty of the stone..
7. Completion
The earring are set, engraved and ready for a final fitting with hooks or earring clips.
Melissa delivers the final piece and makes any necessary adjustments.
